BTR-60/BTR-70 Upgrade Package
The BTR-60PBM-A1 and BTR-70M-A1 wheeled amphibious armored personnel carriers are designated to transport infantry units providing them with direct fire support and fire-from-the-vehicle capability.
The upgrade package is essentially repowering of the vehicles with up-to-date diesel engines (replacing the outdated carburetor petrol ones) and corresponding adaptation of transmission elements and auxiliary systems with virtually no modifications of the hull — the vehicle most essential, expensive and laborous component.
Improvements over the basic versions include:
- enhanced cross-country capability, especially over sand terrains, due to increased engine maximum torque
- 10% endurance increase retaining same fuel volume due to dramatic reduction of fuel consumption
- increased maximum road speed
- introduction of electronic control enabling high synchronism of the engine crankshaft rotation
- improved fire safety of the vehicles due to transition from petrol to diesel fuel
- reduced operating costs
- improved repairability
Weapon configuration includes standard 14.5mm KPVT / 7.62mm PKT machine-gun turret or CM30 one-man turret armed with 2A42 30mm automatic cannon with a coax 7.62mm PKT machine gun.
A 10 kW split-type air-conditioning system can be installed as an option.
Based on the BTR-60PBM-A1 and the BTR-70M-A1 chassis are the MTP-K recovery vehicle intended to provide technical support for the units operating upgraded wheeled APCs, and the BTR-MK command-and-control vehicle.

MTP-K Armored Recovery Vehicle
The MTP-K recovery vehicle ensures:
- repair using hoisting and electric welding equipment
- low or medium difficulty vehicle evacuation
- land or water towing of unoperational vehicles
- technical assistance to the crews in maintenance and failure / damage elimination
Stuck vehicle recovery is enabled by a pull winch with a rigid draw bar in the Tools and Accessories Kit for towing vehicles with steering failure. For mounting / dismantling operations during repair of wheeled armoured vehicles a 1.5 t rotary hoisting device is used consisting of a turret-mounted boom and a hand winch. The same boom can be installed on the fore part of the vehicle body.
Large spare parts can be carried in a special platform mounted on the upper deck.
The MTP-K recovery vehicle turret is armed with a 7.62mm PKT machine gun.

BTR-MK Command-and-Control (С2) Vehicle
The BTR-MK command-and-control vehicle is designed to provide the commander of a mechanized infantry battalion with a capability to control subordinate combat units and to communicate with regiment commander (HQ).
The BTR-MK is based on the BTR-60PBM-A1 and the BTR-70M-A1 chassis and retains their main combat and technical specifications.
Major differences between the combat and the command-and-control vehicles are:
- two UHV radios
- set of telescopic antenna assembly for the UHF antenna
- navaids
